Canoeing Trek Prerequisites (this has been approved by the Troop Committee) Revision 12/16/08
These are the prerequisites for the canoeing trek for Scouts, Scouters and parents who wish to attend the Colorado River canoe Trek over Easter vacation break, April 12-18, 2009.
1. Scouts, Scouters & parents must pass the BSA swimmer’s test prior to the trek. Dave Exter will be conducting the swim tests two weekends prior to Easter weekend.
2. You do not need to have earned the Canoeing Merit Badge; Dave Exter will be available if you would like to earn your Canoeing Merit Badge before Easter. Dave is a Canoeing Merit Badge Counselor.
a. Scouts, Scouters & parents must undergo a 3-hours of refresher training and supervised practice before the trek - to be conducted at the river, before starting the trek.
3. You must have a buddy during the trek as well as a buddy canoe.
a. Scouts will need to have earned the swimming Merit Badge in order to participate in this pseudo-High Adventure Canoe Trek.
4. There will be at least a five to one ratio of Scouts to adults.
5. Scouts, Scouters and parents must complete the online training for:
a. Safe Swim Defense
b. Safety Afloat and
c. Hazardous Weather before Easter 2009.
