Supplemental Youth Leadership Training

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Boy Scouts

Den Chief Training One-day course trains Boy Scouts for Den Chief service to a Cub Scout Den or Pack.  Offered at the Scouting Leadership Conference and one other time during the year.
Youth Leaders Scouting Leadership Conference Largest training event in the Council.  Does not replace Basic Leader Training.  Held the first Saturday in November at a local school.  More than 100 courses offered on subjects designed to broaden knowledge of various subjects from outdoor cooking to advancement.  Includes classes for Youth Leaders.  Large Midway has displays by different Scouting activities, government agencies and local suppliers

Adult Leaders

Life-To-Eagle Workshop Provides a time line for attaining the Eagle Scout Badge before the Scout’s 18th birthday.  Covers planning and executing the required Eagle Scout Project.  Offered quarterly by the Council Advancement Committee. 
Boy Scout Youth Leaders Troop Leadership Training First formal leadership training of a Scout.  Taught in the unit by the Scoutmaster and Senior Patrol Leader.
Boy Scout Youth Leaders National Youth Leadership Training
(Trailblazers)
Second phase of youth leadership skills development after leadership training in the Troop.  Week-long course offered in June.
Boy Scout Youth Leaders National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) Third phase of youth leadership training.  Offered at the Philmont Training Center several times each summer for outstanding youth leaders.  National Youth Leadership Training in the Council is required.  Courses fill quickly, and Council recommendation is required.
Venturing Youth Leaders

Venturing Leadership Skills
(Basic Course)

First of three “upper division” leadership courses for Venturers, and is taught in the Crew by unit leaders.

(Kodiak)

Week-long advanced leadership course.  Includes outdoor curriculum focusing on effective teamwork, values and vision, communications, decision making and planning.  In-Unit leadership Training is required.

Advanced Venturing Leadership Skills
(Kodiak X)

Advanced “upper division” leadership course.  Reinforces Kodiak skills and introduces two additional skill sets in a weekend indoor or outdoor environment.  Take Kodiak first.

Youth Vessel Operators

Seamanship Certification (S) Basic boat handling course.  Covers responsibilities of a vessel operator.  Certification includes basic competencies of anchoring, line handling, rules of the road, and marlinspike seamanship.

Piloting Certification (P) Primary certification for navigation of a vessel within sight of land.  Subjects include plotting a course, determining position, chart knowledge, navigation aids and compass.

Advanced Piloting Certification (AP) Advanced certification for navigation of a vessel within sight of land.  Subjects include advanced course plotting, set and drift, calculating tide height, calculating bridge clearance, advanced compass and advanced navigation aids.

These elective courses provide certifications necessary for Skippers and Mates to instruct and approve Sea Scout Advancement Requirements.

Sea Scout Petty Officers National Sea Scout Advanced
 Leadership
(SEAL)
Week-long training conducted in June and July by BSA Region staff for the Youth Leader most likely to be elected Ship’s Boatswain or Boatswain’s mate. Rigorous format designed to teach dynamic planning, precise communication, command leadership, effective delegation and timely monitoring with follow-up aboard a Sea Scout vessel engaged in a cruise.
